A Longhaired Dachshund (Nimmer), a PooPom (Jimini Wiz), a Smooth Coat Dachshund (Cinder) and a Shiba Inu (Sneeki) inspired their entrepreneur owner (Marty) to start a Telephone Pet Referral Service called Breeder's Directory in 1988. A classified ad, "Want a Pet? Any pet!" showing a telephone number was placed in a newspaper in Northern California and people immediately started calling to locate breeders of puppies, kittens, birds, reptiles, farm animal and exotics. Various Pet Classifieds and Pet Magazines with Breeders advertising became a source for Pet Referrals. Between calls Marty would contact the breeders and invite them to join his Breeder's Directory for a small fee (checks and money orders were the only ways to pay). Soon, Marty's ads were in every major newspapers in California. For the first three years (1988- 91) Marty worked seven days a week for 17 hours a day. By 1993, the Breeder's Directory received more than 300 calls a day from people seeking pets. By then, The Directory had about 200 member breeders. Seeing the possibilities the Internet offered, Marty launched Pets4You.com in 1995. The first dedicated pet website on the Internet drew immediate attention and people and breeders began flocking to the site.
